Kolibre-KADOS and Reading System Interoperability Evaluation

This document shows the result of interoperability testing of Kolibre KADOS and available Reading Systems. We aim to update the list when other reading systems have been tested, feel free to contact us for assistance at info@kolibre.org.

To our knowledge KADOS v0.1 has been successfully tested with Humanware Victor Reader Stream, Plextalk Linio and Webbox2-players at Blindenzeitung.de.

1. A change in Kolibre-KADOS core was required for interoperability with Webbox3. The details of the fix is visible at github (https://github.com/kolibre/Kolibre-KADOS/commit/1624dab5ebc3d225a8ee40dacf000763f9a7dd57).

2. Additionally a bug in the demo adapter was fixed which prevents users from adding the same content multiple times to its bookshelf. The details of the fix is visible at github (https://github.com/kolibre/Kolibre-KADOS/commit/e4b8495501d350290c0a3585839562c275d40a45).

3. Additionally a bug in the demo adapter was fixed which allows users to re-add a content item to its bookshelf after it has been returned. The details of the fix is visible at github (https://github.com/kolibre/Kolibre-KADOS/commit/3556abe7be39dc3084eac0a42e1705024fe75976).

Webbox3 general notes

  • The menus when you login to Daisy Online services are announced in English (also displayed in English) with the Swedish voice Samuel. Sometimes the menus are mixed with Swedish when the number of alternatives are presented.
    • Eg. You have selected Kolibre1, this list contains “fem” items
      • Service Announcements
      • Your bookshelf
      • Remove a book from you bookshelf
      • Service Menu
      • Search
      • You have made no choice, the list will be repeated
  • When a label (text and audio) obtained through the Daisy Online protocol is presented to the user, the player will always play the audio file if it’s part of the label object.
    • Kolibre-KADOS demo service always include an audio file (generated with the open source text-to-speech software eSpeak) with a label object, thus the player always plays the file instead of using the Acapela Samuel voice.
      • With a modification in Kolibre-KADOS demo service (to not include audio files in labels) the player used the Acapela Samuel voice to present the label for the user and the quality of the voice is much better than the generated audio files from eSpeak.
  • If the user has unread service announcement, upon entering the Service Menu (Dynamic Menus) one of the options presented to the user is a “Service Announcement” menu, although this menu was not part of the returned menus. A user can read service announcement without entering the Service Menu, hence I find it odd that the menu appears in the Service Menu. If there are no unread announcements then the  option is not presented to the user in the Service Menu nor in Webbox3’s own menu options.
